The place of T in the Chronicle

We have hitherto confined our use of the symbol T to denote that version of the early Magyar tradition which, as we have seen, Anon, and X must have known in almost identical form — probably deriving it from two related texts — although each blended it with various other material and modified it in different ways.

And we have confined our use of the symbol to such passages as could definitely be proved, or safely inferred on grounds of very strong probability, to belong to this common text.

But ought the term to be used in a wider sense? Ought we to suppose that the author of T also composed, or at any rate edited and blended with his own work, any later passages of the Chronicle, so that it would be fair to ascribe to him authorship of a "Gesta" in the sense in which Homan uses the term — although, as we have seen, it would in any case be impossible to credit any such "Gesta" with such extensive scope or exclusive authority as Hóman believes?

There are certain grounds for supposing the common ancestor of X and Anon, to have gone beyond the pagan period. Anon, certainly knew some form of a Hungarian chronicle covering a later period than the early 10th century. He has one or two passages which seem to recall even the text of passages in B and V. We have alredy noted10 such passages of correspondence with B 71, B 74, B 88, V 137, 138, 145, 148. Other parallels can be found with B 102, 104, 105, 125.11

10 See above, pp. 116, 143. n.

11 These are listed at length in Hóman Gesta pp. 72—5. A few of these seem to me forced; but this does not affect the main point, for many of them are indisputable.

Furthermore, there are certain turns of phrase, etc., common to the indisputable T and to later periods of the Chronicle. Examples of these are:

Hóman. thinks that this "Gesta" must have been his supposed "Gesta" of St. Ladislaus' day, with a continuation up to 1127, in which year he finds the last parallel with Anon. This cannot be right; partly because, as we have seen, the composition of the V interpolations is different from what he supposes; and party for another reason. As we saw, one of the reasons for supposing Anon.'s. King Béla to have been Bela III is because Anon, mentions Susdal, which did not rise into prominence sufficient to warrant the place given it until about 1175, or too late for Béla II.
